Composting Class Coming Soon

Are You Ready for State-Mandated Composting? Join us for a composting tutorial in Thrush at noon on Monday, August 19th and receive a discounted compost bin!
Vermont’s ACT 148 regulates waste diversion for recyclable and compostable materials. The law is important because allowing food scraps and other organic materials in landfills accelerates climate change, while composting negates the effect. Additionally, composting and recycling reduces the volume of material sent to our near-capacity landfills.

Our office starting diverting food scraps in 2009, five years before it was required by state law in 2014 when ACT 148 was phased in for large producers. In 2020, ACT 148 will require all residents to divert food scraps for the trash stream.

Learning how to compost now will make complying with the law much easier. The course will cover topics including optimal materials ratios, keeping out animals, and “jumpstarting” an old pile.  Participants will have the option to buy significantly discounted “soil saver” composting bins for $35. Green Cones will be available at-cost for $125 each. CVSWMD will bring a truck-load of composters on-site, so make sure to leave room in your car if you plan to purchase a bin.
