Yes, the first day of spring has arrived and it’s certainly welcome this year.
It actually got here last night at 11:50 p.m. Eastern, 10:50 p.m. Central.
Here’s a fun fact for you. This is actually as early as spring can start.
The Farmers Almanac tells us that the Vernal Equinox, or the first day of spring, came on March 21.
But astronomers and calendar authors shifted that to March 20th. And in 2020, it’s moved just barely into March 20th, the first time that’s happened since 1896. (If you want an explanation for all of this, check out the Farmers Almanac article.)
Spring is a very different experience on our two campuses. It’s usually a welcome relief from the snow in Vermont. (Yes, we know, snow is still quite possible.) In Texas, it’s a harbinger of the heat and humidity to come (and hopefully, no tornadoes.)
