Carolyn Kittredge retired on August 13th after 41 years with National Life, and we couldn’t let her go without asking her 10 questions about her time with the company. Here’s what she had to say:

Carolyn with her family

Q. What brought you to National Life?

A. When I began at National Life, HR recruited individuals from local high schools and I was lucky enough to be chosen. I actually had an offer from National Life and for the State of Vermont on the same day; I chose National Life.

Q. You’ve been with the company for 41 years – wow! Tell us a little more about the different business areas you’ve worked in over the years.

A. Oh my, so many moves along the way. Several positions within DMS and moved to Claims in 1982. I have held each position within the claims team: Support, Payments, A & S processing, Disability Income Support, Death Claim Examiner, Living Benefit Examiner, Claim Manager (death, living benefits and TX Team) as well as managed the Title Team and Address Change Team and now, a Technical Operations Analyst. I think that is a wrap!

Q. If we rewind the clock 41 years, that will set us back to 1980. What’s the biggest change that has occurred within NL since then?

A. Computers – laptops for all!! And thankfully no more smoking at one’s desk; or in the building!

Q. Speaking of1980, what’s one fad or trend you hope never makes a comeback?

A. Big hair!!

Q. What is your fondest memory from working at National Life?

A. There are many fond memories. I have met so many wonderful people who I have also become personal friends with. Workwise, I can recall many conversations with our clients/beneficiaries and agents and knowing I was able to help them or just listen for a bit; that in itself is a fond memory.

Q. How will you spend your retirement?

A. Well, for the first time, I don’t have a plan set in stone. If you read my Dear World, it is Family First! It is my time for me to fully enjoy time with my husband (perhaps taking the boat out for an afternoon when we want) enjoying our three grown children, their spouses and well, most importantly our three grandchildren; they are the light of my life!!! Also, I will be able to spend more time with my Mom who is now 93!

Q. What are you most looking forward to?

A. Being able to help my family or attend events when they arise without checking my work schedule.

Q. What’s is something you think everyone should try at least once in their life?

A. Anything that is out of their comfort zone! We are all unique, grab chances when they appear.

Q. What advice would you give to those who are just starting their career?

A. Always be true to yourself, listen to your conscience, it is an amazing thing!

Q. What parting words do you want to leave your colleagues with?

A. What a great team!! Please remember to not only speak up but to listen to each other before you proceed. Learn from everyone; we all have something to share. Be kind, always.
