We decided to celebrate Dr. Julius Dewey’s birthday this week as we head toward our 170th birthday celebration this fall.

Dr. Dewey is credited as the founder of National Life in 1848. He was born on Aug. 22, 1801, and was a prominent businessman in Montpelier.

He was involved in the founding of National Life and became president in 1851, holding the post until 1877. He was known for riding by horseback to visit customers and potential customers.

Given Dr. Dewey’s importance to our company, we decided to make his birthday a pre-celebration to National Life’s upcoming birthday. (It’s on Nov. 13, by the way.)

So we rolled out the folk art bust of him and placed it in the lobby on the Montpelier campus and put slides up on both campuses of Dewey paintings.

We’re encouraging everyone to have some fun, too, and take a selfie and post it to social media with the hashtag #HangingWithDewey.

There will be more events and activities in addition to our Dr. Dewey observation leading up to our birthday. We’ll let you know when plans are finalized.
