Stansfield Turner, a former member of the National Life board and also a retired director of the Central Intelligence Agency, died over the weekend at 94.
Turner led the CIA under President Jimmy Carter, helping the agency to emerge from the turmoil of the Watergate years. He served from 1977 to 1981.
A few years after leaving the CIA, Turner was recruited to serve on National Life’s board.
Turner was on the board from 1984, replacing the retiring Deane Davis, until 1996.
“There’s almost no facet of American business today that isn’t affected by what goes on in the rest of the world, whether you’re actually in business overseas or not,” Turner said at the time of his election to the board. “I hope I can bring support to the board regarding the trends and events in the rest of the world that could affect the company.”
