After several months of searching, a new site manager of the public safety team for the Vermont campus has been appointed.
Mark Lauer most recently was working as a Private Investigator conducting investigations involving workman’s compensation fraud complaints. Prior to this he was a Deputy Sheriff assigned to the Burlington office of the Drug Enforcement Administration as an undercover Task Force Officer.
In October 2013, Mark retired from the Vermont State Police after serving for 27 years. As a Vermont State Trooper, he held a variety of positions and retired as the Director of the Vermont Information &Analysis Center.
The Vermont Information & Analysis Center is a specialized unit staffed by various organizations to include sworn state police personnel, Vermont National Guard members, Vermont Air Guard members, FBI, FPS as well as a Department of Homeland Security Information and Analysis employee.
The mission of the Vermont Information & Analysis Center is to provide analytical support to the entire law enforcement community of Vermont and its surrounding regions. The Vermont Information &Analysis Center is a highly regarded unit and recognized for the assistance it provides to the Law Enforcement Community, one of the most notable achievements of this unit is its ability to track and document cases involving Missing Persons in Vermont. This program received significant recognition from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
Prior to commanding, the Information & Analysis Center Mark was the Commander of the Vermont State Police Computer Crime Unit. In this capacity, he was responsible for overseeing all investigations that involved any form of digital communications. He developed a system for Vermont State Police officers to follow relating to the use of computers and their involvement in crime. He was also responsible for setting up training and providing guidance for officers conducting internet investigations, as well as coordinating multi-agency investigations. Mark was responsible for establishing the Computer Crime Unit for Vermont State Police and was involved in the initial establishment of the Internet Crimes Against Children program in Vermont along with members of Burlington Police Department, Essex Police Department and the FBI – Burlington Office.
Mark also worked in the Criminal Intelligence Unit. In this capacity, he worked with both Vermont State Police personnel and members of the Vermont National Guard in developing background material for officers in the field preparing to execute search warrants. Additionally, duties held by Mark have included working as an Assistant System Administrator for the CAD/Record Management System that is used by the Vermont State Police and 35 local and federal law enforcement agencies. In this role, Mark was responsible for installation and training for the new users of the CAD/RMS system. During his 27 years as a Trooper, Mark was a K-9 handler, member of the Tactical Support Unit (SWAT), and instructed DWI on a national level.
In addition to overseeing the Vermont Information & Analysis Center, Mark was the AMBER Child Abduction Alert Coordinator and the Missing Persons Clearinghouse Manager for the State of Vermont. Mark holds an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice from Mohawk Valley Community College of New York.
