Sometimes it can be difficult to understand this nebulous concept that National Life is a mission-driven, purpose-filled company, one that is on a cause to do good in the world.

Well, here’s a way to understand the idea.

Over the weekend, National Life helped ensure that the National Coalition for School Safety Summit took place in Birmingham, Alabama.

This isn’t the type of thing that a life insurance company is typically known for. But it fits perfectly into our cause of making the world a better place.

CEO Mehran Assadi told the summit attendees in a welcome that National Life is dedicated to teachers all across the country in the products we sell. But we’re also dedicated to them, their students and the families of the teachers and students. The work of the National Coalition for Safe Schools supports all of them.

“This is also a cause, one led by teachers, to make a difference and to Do Good,” Mehran said.

The summit drew together about 50 leading teachers, including one from Sandy Hook, Conn., site of the deadliest mass shooting at a U.S. school in history; 10 LifeChanger of the Year winners and nominees, including two grand prize winners; many state level teachers of the year; and many other experts.

The National Life Group Foundation made a grant to pay for the summit. And National Life gave in-kind contributions to help organize the coalition, create its website and staff the summit.

“We are so fortunate to have the support of this intensely human organization,” lead organizer Melissa Morris, a New York City teacher, wrote after the summit on Facebook. “’Do Good, Be Good, Make Good’ is a motto they are living up to with every breath they take – all of them!”

An agent from ValuTeachers, who also happens to be a retired teacher, was also on hand for the summit to participate and to help support the event.

National Life has committed to staying involved with the coalition as the organizers synthesize what they developed at the conference. We will then help them spread the word.
