Yes, CEO Mehran Assadi is on Twitter, sharing updates about what he’s been doing and his cause-driven business philosophy.

And because of an updated employee social media policy, you’re encouraged to follow him, like his Tweets and even share them.

First, here’s where you find Mehran on Twitter. As you’ll see, he was on the road this week presenting to an industry group about the culture we’ve developed at National Life.

And second, that Tweet from the ACLI conference, Financial & Investment Roundtable, is a great example of how our newly approved social media policy works.

Employees can go onto Twitter and follow Mehran. His handle is @AssadiMehran. Once you do, the policy permits employees to “like” the Tweet and also share it on your own account as a retweet.

Until now, our corporate social media policy did not permit use of Twitter, except for the corporate account. But now we can use Twitter accounts approved by Market Conduct and Compliance. The social media policy for our field partners is being updated, as well.

For business purposes, we’re still constrained because of the business we’re in.

What that means is that if you’re a registered representative or you’re an employee who has been fingerprinted because your job entails handling customer policies and the like, understand that social networking sites may not be used to conduct business on behalf of National Life or Equity Services Inc.

If you want to use social media for business purposes, your profile would need to be reviewed and approved by Market Conduct and Compliance first. So while you can like and share, if you list more than a title and the company, your profile may need review. If you’re not sure about your profile, contact Deb LaRose for assistance.

But employees now have much more freedom to share and like (or love, or whatever else you choose on something like Facebook) posts from the corporate accounts or from Mehran’s that have already been reviewed by compliance.

Compliance doesn’t monitor what you’re doing on your personal social media accounts. But our compliance officers’ jobs require them to make sure that anything we do that identifies us as an employee needs to follow the regulations. So follow us, like us, share us. But don’t use any of the social media platforms to try to sell National Life or its products.

As a reminder, you can become a brand ambassador by following all of our corporate social accounts: Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.
