Interns from the Dallas campus had the opportunity on Wednesday to join Appreciation Financial in volunteering at the Dallas Texans Can Academy, a high school for at-risk students that doubles as a preschool.

The interns put in some serious elbow grease painting, cleaning, organizing, interviewing, socializing, and playing basketball.

Our more fearless interns took turns climbing ladders to reach the tops of murals and banners in the school’s gym.

Better yet, no one shied away from the sweat or dirt that was involved, but instead held in their minds the higher purpose of their day of hard work.

On the surface, the interns knew the volunteering was an opportunity to be away from the office and to interact with the Appreciation Financial agents.

However, not only were the interns humbled by the beauty of being involved and benevolent members of the community, but were able to create tangible change to make the Texans Can student experience just a little bit better in the long run.

At National Life, we encourage our employees and affiliates to do good, be good, and make good.  Thus, involving our interns in service is not only one step towards making National Life a better workplace, but an opportunity to shape eleven interns into responsible, emerging leaders in our global community.

Emily Pook is one of the interns who participated.
