Laura Perez, administrative assistant to Craig Fowler and FMG’s Corporate Development Team, is the last profile in our National Life Administrative Professionals Group (APG) series. 1. ¿Desde cuándo trabajas profesionalmente en el sector administrativo?
Empecé como asistente administrativa en el 2004, en el 2008 pasé al área de marketing y comunicaciones, y un año después comencé a trabajar como gerente de proyectos para una organización internacional que desarrolla programas de cultura y educación. Renuncié a ese trabajo en abril del 2016 para venir a vivir a los Estados Unidos con mi familia, y desde diciembre he vuelto a ser asistente administrativa otra vez, con National Life. Así que juntando todo, he estado apoyando y trabajando con otros para lograr resultados alrededor de 13 años.
2. ¿Qué es para ti más gratificante como profesional de la administración?
Ayudar a otros. Suena fácil, pero no lo es.
3. ¿Qué consejo le darías a alguien empezando su carrera?
Mi consejo sería continuar aprendiendo y recibiendo entrenamiento, sobre la industria en la trabaja, sobre cómo manejar el tiempo, las dinámicas grupales, gerencia de proyectos, contabilidad, administración de presupuestos, marketing, diseño de páginas web, los temas no tienen fin. El rango y alcance de nuestro trabajo es muy amplio y así mismo son las habilidades y el conocimiento que podemos adquirir y luego transferir a nuestra práctica diaria.
4. ¿Cuál es la parte que más te gusta de trabajar para National Life?
Su gente y su cultura –para mí es realmente extraordinario que los valores de una compañía en el sector de las finanzas sean Haz el Bien, Se Bueno, Crea Bien. Estoy orgullosa de trabajar para una organización como esta.
5. ¿Dónde creciste? ¿Dónde vives ahora?
Nací y me crié en la Habana, Cuba. Crecí rodeada de luz, oyendo la buena música en vivo que sale de los Cafés, y a 30 minutos de playas increíbles, como esas que la gente usa como refrescador de pantalla. Ahora vivo aquí en Montpelier, un lugar que tal vez no parece tan exótico pero que a mí me resulta igualmente encantador.
6. ¿Tu juguete favorito de la niñez?
Una cuerda de saltar. Durante años tuve una en la mochila para jugar con mis amigas a la hora del receso, y después de la escuela. Saltábamos horas y horas…me haría falta un poco de todo ese ejercicio ahora!
7. ¿Cuál es el mejor libro que has leído? Tengo dos mejores libros: ‘Cien Años de Soledad’ de Gabriel García Márquez, y ‘El Cuento de la Criada’, de Margaret Atwood. Qué estás leyendo ahora? ‘La Ciudad de los Huesos’, de Michael Connelly. Un perro le trae a su dueño un hueso que encontra en el bosque. El hueso resulta ser humano, lo que abre una investigación criminal. Y solo he leído los dos primeros capítulos así que no les puedo decir mucho más…
8. ¿Tu organización benéfica favorita, o lugar favorito para hacer trabajo voluntario?
El Centro para Adultos Mayores de Montpelier, trabajando en la cocina para su programa FEAST Meals.
9. ¿Si pudieras cenar con alguien del pasado, quién sería?
Charlie Chaplin. Bueno, con el Vagabundo, realmente.
10. ¿Cuál es tu dicho favorito?
‘Si la vida te da limones, házte una limonada. La versión cubana sigue: ‘Pónle ron y yerba buena y ahí ya tienes un Mojito’.

1. How long have you been an administrative professional?
I started working as an administrative assistant in 2004, moved to marketing and communications in 2008, and a year later got a job as a project manager with an international arts and education organization. I quit that job in April 2016 to move from Cuba to the U.S with my family, and since last December I am back to being an administrative professional with National Life. So all in all, I’ve been supporting and working with others to make things happen for 13 years now.
2. What do you find most rewarding as an administrative professional?
Helping others. Sounds easy, but it isn’t.
3. What advice would you give to someone starting their career?
My advice would be to keep learning and training, about the industry where you are working, about time management, team dynamics, project management, accounting, budget management, marketing, web page design, you name it. The scope of the work we do is very wide and so are the skills and the knowledge we can acquire and transfer to our daily practice.
4. Favorite part of working at National Life?
Its people and its culture –I find quite extraordinary that the values of a company in the finance industry are Do Good, Be Good, Make Good. I am proud to work for such an organization.
5. Where did you grow up? Where do you live now?
I was born and raised in Havana, Cuba. I grew up surrounded by light, hearing lots of great live music coming out of the Cafés, and 30 minutes from incredible beaches, like those some people have as screen savers. I now live here in Montpelier, a place you might think doesn’t seem as exotic but that I find equally charming.
6. Favorite childhood toy?
A jump rope. For years I always had one in my school backpack to play with my friends during breaks. We would jump for hours…I could certainly use some of all that exercise now!
7. Best book you have ever read? I have two best books: ‘One hundred Years of Solitude’ by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and ‘The Handmaids Tale’ by Margaret Atwood. What are you reading now? ‘City of Bones’ by Michael Connelly. A dog brings his owner a bone from the woods. It happens to be a human bone so a murder investigation begins. And I’ve only read the first two chapters so I can’t tell you much more…
8. Favorite charity/place to volunteer?
Montpelier Senior Center, doing kitchen work for their FEAST Meals program.
9. If you could have dinner with one person from the past, who would it be?
Charlie Chaplin. Well, with the Tramp, actually.
10. What is your favorite saying?
‘When life gives you lemons, make lemonade’. The Cuban version goes longer: ‘Add some rum and mint and you have a Mojito.’
