National Life is still the largest company based in the state of Vermont.

Vermont Business Magazine does an annual survey of companies that are headquartered in the state, based on revenue.

And National Life dwarfs any of the other companies. We reported $2.2 billion in revenue and the University of Vermont Medical Center, the No. 2 institution on the list, had $1.3 billion.

The only other billion-dollar company on this year’s list was Cabot Creamery Cooperative with $1 billion in revenue.

Close observers will note that the revenue figure in the magazine looks a little different from what we’ve been seeing in other internal reports.

That’s because Vermont Business Magazine seeks specific information that excludes some of our types of revenue.

National Life has been on the Vermont 100 list of largest companies since its inception in 1987 and is one of only four companies that have ranked No. 1.

“Our first and current top firm is National Life, which is not only the largest Vermont-based firm but also consistently boasts strong growth,” the magazine reported. “Congratulations to them.”
