We were happy to get word this week about some recognition that one of our college interns received at school for the work he did this summer.
Antonio Lapeyrolerie is a student at Clark University in Worcester, Mass.
Antonio worked with underwriting the data analytics team here at National Life over the summer as one of our interns.
Here’s what Clark had to say about Antonio, and what Antonio had to say about his time at National Life.
Basketball Player Makes Impact in Vermont
Antonio Lapeyrolerie is already making his mark on the world thanks to his drive and dedication. He is a young man with multiple facets; athlete, student, LEEP scholar. He can now add impactful underwriter to his list.
Over the summer, this rising basketball star traded in his jersey for a button-up while working for National Life Group (NLG) in Montpelier, Vermont. There, he was a contributing member of the Underwriting team and worked closely with the Data Analytics department in an effort to reduce unnecessary medical expenses. “Our work was very impactful this summer because it gave NLG’s Underwriting Team precise insight into their exact expenditure avenues. Having this knowledge will allow them to make informed decisions on how to minimize their medical costs and liabilities for many years to come,” says Antonio.
To those who know him, it’s no surprise Antonio was selected for this highly-coveted internship out of applicants nationwide. Aside from his challenging coursework as an Economics and Geography major, he is also Vice President/ Assistant Director of ClarkU Investments and Trading Society, which aims to create an on-campus platform for students to share knowledge of the financial markets, develop necessary knowledge and skills required for a career in finance, and build a strong and consistent network among club alumni and current members. However, his technical skills were not the only factor in securing this opportunity.
When NLG expressed interest in candidates with communication skills and those who work well in collaborative environments, Antonio reflected on his experience with the basketball team. “The Clark Basketball team helped lay the seeds for self-improvement, introspection, and a brighter emotional aura that intensified throughout my time in Vermont and evolved into a restored and better version of myself. It is because of this growth I was able to cling tighter to virtues and have success. And it’s because I grew in this way, and became a better version of myself, that I will empower my teammates to do the same, on and especially off the court,” says Antonio.
Antonio is one of 15 players currently on the basketball roster who collectively hold at 3.45 GPA. An impressive feat while practicing 6 days a week, attending games (both home and away) and holding leadership positions in student clubs.
