During Monday’s lunch hour, National Life employees (including 4 virtual attendees) were joined by 10 state employees and 2 retirees for a lesson on backyard composting presented by the Central Vermont Solid Waste Management District.

About half of the class attendees had never attempted backyard composting, and the other half was eager to learn more.

The class reviewed Vermont’s universal recycling law, options for disposing food scraps, and the optimal 3:1 paper/wood scraps to food scraps ratio needed for those who choose composting in their backyards. Audience members concerned about frozen compost, animals, methane emissions, and more all had their questions answered. Everyone left with a free counter top bucket and a 3-step guide on keeping bears away!

Given the popularity of the course, we hope to schedule several more in the next year. For those eager to start sooner, consider talking to one of our many knowledgeable co-workers who attended the class.

Please send any questions, comments, and feedback on composting you may have to CMaitland@nationallife.com.
