A group of friends from National Life got to talking among themselves about what they could do to help families who were struck by tragedy earlier this month when a wrong-way driver crashed into a car, killing their children.

That conversation led to a determination to raise money.

The National Life group of Katy Tyner, Dana Bean, Colin Pomer and Rory McDonald decided what was needed was a public show of support and a fund-raiser.

So they enlisted some help and within about 24 hours pulled together Montpelier Stands With Harwood, a walk from National Life through downtown Montpelier to show support for families and students at nearby Harwood Union High School.

The effort by Katy, Dana, Colin and Rory was recognized this week with a Shout-Out award.

“One community member thanked the team for giving people ‘an outlet to grieve,’” the nomination for the award said.

Collection boxes were set up at National Life and City Hall for the walk, which drew nearly 500 people. A total of close to $1,500 was raised for the Five Families Fund of the Mad River Valley Community Fund.
