Another educator was treated to a surprise ceremony last week to announce he’s one of this year’s LifeChanger of the Year award recipients.

Jemel Floyd is the building and grounds supervisor at Grand View Boulevard Elementary School in Los Angeles.

“Around campus, Jemel is known and adored by teachers, students, and staff alike,” community member Leah Berzon wrote of Jemel in his nomination. “In fact, he is hailed as ‘J. Flo,’ which to me, makes perfect sense. The very moment you meet him, you undoubtedly know he ‘flows’ to his own unique rhythm, a rhythm infused with heart, kindness, and a whole lot of soul.”

But he was recognized for more than the calm reassuring way he goes about his work at Grand View Boulevard Elementary.

Although he’s the single parent of three young girls, he also volunteers two hours every afternoon throughout the school year at George Washington High School in South Central L.A. coaching the boys’ and girls’ volleyball teams and the girls’ basketball team.

On weekends he volunteers with a male youth group dedicated to ending violence.

Jemel was awarded $3,000 as a LifeChanger, half for himself and the other half for his school.

We have a few more surprise popups for LifeChanger winners in the next couple of weeks and then the Grand Prize will be announced at the Conference of Champions in May.
